  • Here are two quick checks that can identify a failing hub. Set the parking brake, block the rear wheels and support the vehicle with a jack stand under the suspension. Grasp the tire with gloved hands at the 12/6 position and try to rock the tire and wheel in and out. Any identifiable play in the hub -- not in the suspension or steering -- is cause for concern. Next, turn the key on but do not start the engine, shift the transmission into neutral and turn the key back to the off position. Carefully grasp the front coil spring with one gloved hand and spin the wheel and tire with the other. Often, a worn bearing in a front hub
  • While driving down the road about 40 mph, sway the car side to side slowly, shifting the weight of the vehicle from one side to the other. Do not drive crazy or cause the car to spin out, just sway it gently. Notice whether the noise gets louder or softer. If the noise is a little less if you turn right, the damaged bearing may be on the left, or vice versa.

Forces can be multiplied using such a device. One newton input produces 50 newtons output. Pascal's principle underlies the operation of the hydraulic press. The hydraulic press does not violate energy conservation, because a decrease in distance moved compensates for the increase in force. When the small piston is moved downward 100 centimeters, the large piston will be raised only one-fiftieth of this, or 2 centimeters. The input force multiplied by the distance moved by the smaller piston is equal to the output force multiplied by the distance moved by the larger piston; this is one more example of a simple machine operating on the same principle as a mechanical lever.

Knock And Ignition Timing

Knock is caused by predetonation. Due to the fact that the piston speed increases as the engine speed increases we need to advance the timing as the speed increases. Advance means the spark is moving to the left of TDC. Retarding the ignition means moving it towards TDC preventing knock.
